Frequently
Asked Questions
(1) Why should I do the Preparation for
IELTS General Module Course?
Answer:
Very recently the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC)
introduced some new changes that are related to evidence of English
language competency. The Temporary Business Visa (457) now requires
employees to demonstrate an IELTS level of 4.5 before their 457
visas will be renewed.
For Graduates applying for the 497 Visa they will receive an
extra 25 points towards Residency if they can demonstrate that
they have achieved an IELTS level of 7.0.
The Preparation for IELTS General Module Course will dramatically
improve the chances that test candidates have of achieving their
desired IELTS goal.
The course teaches you the IELTS test strategies and techniques.
Knowing these strategies is a very important aspect of passing
the test.
(2) Who is eligible to enrol in the IELTS
General Module Course at Phoenix?
Answer:
The course is open to almost everyone. There are two levels available:
Level 1
for people with Elementary to Pre-Intermediate
abilities in English -this equates to an IELTS level
of 2 up until 4.5. These are clients who need to pass the IELTS
at level 4.5 in order to renew their 457 Work Visa. The 457
visa usually last for 4 years and as of July 1st 2007 when a
current 457 visa expires employees will have to show evidence
of an IELTS score of 4.5 or higher in order for the DIAC (Department
of Immigration and Citizenship) to renew their visa.
Level 2 for people
with Intermediate and higher
abilities in English which equates to an IELTS level
of 5.0 to 7. These are the clients who have met the academic
requirements for the 497 Graduate Visa and in order to be eligible
for the full 25 points allocated for evidence of English proficiency
towards their premanent residency application need to pass the
IELTS at a level 7.
(3) Do I have to sit a test to enter the
course?
Answer:
No, not normally. When you enrol we will ascertain your reason
for entering the course and will ask you for some evidence such
as how long you have been working or studying in Australia. This
should be enough for us to determine whether you are eligible
to enter the course.
(4) What will I study in the course?
Answer:
The six-week course (18 hours in total) will concentrate on training
you in the main skills required to pass the IELTS exam at the
level you require. The course covers all four skills of Speaking,
Listening, Reading and Writing. You will have lots of opportunity
to practise old IELTS tests and to practice IELTS Interview techniques.
(5) What is the difference between the
IELTS General Training Module and the Academic Module?
Answer:
The Listening and Speaking components of the two tests are exactly
the same. For the Writing component one question is the same and
this is the Essay Writing. For the second Writing question on
the Academic module the candidate must describe a graph or diagram
and for the General module the candidate must Write a Letter.
For the Reading test both modules have three sections with 40

is the context of the texts.
